On this page we will try to bring you information on the dangers and some of the cures for excessive noise. There are many safety and health reasons as well as productivity  benefits to be gained from sound proofing and noise control programs.

There are many environmental causes of hearing damage both in the home and the work place. Recent research estimates in the United Kingdom  that 170,000 people suffer from deafness, tinnitus (permanent sensation of noises or ringing in the ears) or other ear conditions because of excessive workplace noise. In the United states as many as 30 million  people are regularly exposed to noise levels that  exposed to noise levels that can and do damage hearing. This estimate is an increase  of about 10 million persons in just  the past five years.  We usually  think of people in their 40's or 50's to suffer from some sort of hearing loss and this was the case with our grandparents generation, but because of increased noise levels generally many people in their teens or early 20's suffer from diminished hearing.

Research indicates that as well as hearing loss, excessive noise effect health as well. Noise elevates blood-pressure, causes fatigue, impairs sleep, increases frustrations and anxiety levels, increases breathing rate, disturbs digestion and causes difficulty in concentration.

Power tools, hair dryers, dishwashers, blenders, lawn mowers, and vacuum cleaners can easily exceed 85 dB. The use of  hearing protection can provide protection when using some items when quieter alternatives are not available. One should check the dB rating of products when evaluating a purchase. In the case of dishwashers and other stationary appliances we have a variety of products the reduce the generated noise.

To find a local audiologist or for free information the warning  signs and protection against hearing loss You can call The American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) at 1 (800) 638-8255 or visit their web site
